An early morning house fire in the Kaumana area of Hilo caused an estimated $302,175 in damage Sunday.

According to a Fire Department statement, eight units consisting of a total 18 firefighters responded to the 1:42 a.m. alarm on South Wilder Road in the Hilo Country Club Estates subdivision.

The first unit arrived nine minutes later. Once it was determined the fire had done substantial damage to the roof, all resources went to preventing roof collapse.

Hawaii Electric Light Co. disconnected power to the home. The fire was reported under control at 2:27 a.m. and extinguished at 3:59 a.m.

An estimated $33,575 in property value was preserved by firefighters’ efforts. Fire inspectors and police are determining the cause of the blaze but foul play is not initially suspected.

No one was injured and the Red Cross is assisting the occupants, fire officials said.
